Southern Belle Precious Alternative Syrah
Precious is an appropriate name for a wine that it is as rare as it is sought after.
“aged in used whiskey barrels”
The wine with the ethereal label is aged in used whiskey barrels, sourced from Julian Van Winkle, proprietor of the Pappy Van Winkle Distillery in Kentucky. Yes, that’s right, before those charred oak barrels held wine for eighteen months, whiskey slept in that wood for twenty years!
Briefly, the story goes: American importer Dan Philips does dinner with Julian Van Winkle, president of Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery, at a Southern Foodways Alliance meeting. Philips floats the idea of aging wine in Van Winkle’s used bourbon barrels. Philips calls winemaker Chris Ringland, who makes wine in Australia and Spain. According to Russo the “three ubermensches combined their talents to produce a singular expression that pushes the envelope on Syrah and Mouvedre from Spain.”
What happens when delicious, old vine Spanish Syrah meets used twenty year Pappy Van Winkle barrels? This alternative wine brings exactly what it promises. It is one of the best wines we have on the shelf right now. The aroma that wafts out of the empty bottle is enough to make your mouth water. The Market Basket is one of a handful of retailers to get any of this one, and I have no doubt it will sell out quick. With the holiday season upon us, let’s just say we’re feeling merry.
