Thorn Wine from Napa
Every Rose Has It’s…. Thorn
If only every rose had a thorn like this one! Thorn is one of the best wines I have seen come out of Napa so far this year. If you like big, heavily extracted Napa cabs, this wine is for you. If you don’t usually go for a Merlot (like me), this wine is for you. Thorn is a blend of 78% Merlot, Malbec and Syrah. This wine has dense dark fruit, velvety tannins and an opulent, lingering finish. When winemaker, Jen Beloz of the Prisoner Wine Company came across small lots of Merlot in the hilltop vineyards of Atlas Peak she opted to make a wine to celebrate classic Napa Merlot. According to Beloz, this wine is all about preserving elegant Napa Merlot. Grapes for Thorn are sourced from acclaimed Napa vineyards such as Stagecoach and Antica. The elevated terrain and rocky soil ensure the plum characteristics as well as the smooth tannins in the Merlot grapes. This wine is a great addition to any cellar although it is drinking quite well right now. My suggestion would be to buy one for now and one for later.
